Changzhou Travel Guide
The famous trading city of Changzhou became prosperous as a major port on the Grand Canal; the waterway built by Emperor Sui Yangdi in the 6th century to link Beijing and Hangzhou. To this day it remains an important transportation link as a stop on the Shanghai Beijing railway.
Changzhou has a long history of spawning great artists and thinkers, and has been immortalized in many classic Chinese novels as a romantic city of picturesque gardens and elegant waterways.
Modern Changzhou is developing at breakneck speed, both commercially and as a tourist hot-spot. It has become one of the most highly visited cities in Jiangsu province, whilst successfully maintaining a lot of its unique characteristics. The central square in the city is surrounded by a mixture of modern malls and small stores selling some of the city special delicacies. Nearby the city proper, there also lies the charming Tianmu Lake; a renowned spot for dining on fresh seafood in restaurants situated right at the water edge. For those wishing to visit an Eastern Chinese city of a gentler pace, Changzhou is the ideal destination.
