Peking Opera is one of the types of drama of Chinese operas that formed in Beijing and has the history of nearly two hundred years. Based on Hui opera and Han opera, Peking Opera absorbs the strength and characteristics of some other dramas, such as Kunqu and Qinqiang, and gradually develops into its current form.

Opera music belongs to Ban accent, and it mainly has two systems of Erhuang and Xipi, so Opera is also known as ''Pi Huang''. There are about 1,000 traditional repertoires of Peking Opera, and 300 or 400 of them were often performed. Except the Hui opera, Han opera, Kun Opera, and Qin Qiang, there are also many that have been written by the Peking opera artists and civil writers. Beijing Opera specializes in the performance of political and military struggle.

And the stories mostly come from the Historical Creation and the script for novel. There are not only a large number of selected scenes, but also a number of serialized theatrical performances.

The dividing of the profession trade of the opera roles is more stringent. In the early times, it was divided into Sheng, Dan, Jin, Mo, Chou, Wu Hang, and the utility man. Later, it was divided into the Sheng, Dan, Jin, Mo, Chou, and every profession has its own detailed and further division of labor. Sheng is the common name of the role for male, except the Harlequin and the painted-face character. It is also divided into the oldboy (Xusheng), Xiao Sheng (usually a young scholar or lover role), Wu Sheng (a fighting or military character), and Wawa Sheng (the role as a child). Dan is
the common name of the role for female, which is also divided into Zheng Dan (representative of chaste characters), Hua Dan (a vivacious young woman, a coquette), Guimen Dan (female role of the maidenly type), Wu Dan (a female acrobatic-fighting lead), pantaloon, Cai Dan (usually a shrewd and sometimes comic woman), and Dao Ma Tan (a female warrior role). Jin, commonly known as painted-face character, mainly plays the male roles with specific nature, quality or appearance by using the facebook, rotund tone and the rugged style. Chou plays a comedic role. Because of a small piece of white powder on the nose, Chou is commonly known as small painted role.

The classification of facial makeup of the Peking Opera include: the entire face, heroic face, six sub-face, distorted face, fairy face, clown face, and so on.
