Butterfly Spring is a small paradise that lies hidden in the green trees at the foot of Yunnong Peak of Cangshan Mountain. The Spring is 24 kilometers away from the Ancient City of Dali. The water in the pond is as clear as a mirror, and around the pond stand marble balusters on which the famous Chinese contemporary intellectual Guo Moruo inscribed Chinese characters with the name Butterfly Spring. Two strong, one hundred year old Silktree Albizzia provide shade for Butterfly Spring.
How does Butterfly Spring get its name? In the third and fourth month of every lunar year, all kinds of flowers on the Yunnong Peak are in bloom. The big Silktree Albizzia by the spring give off a faint fragrance that attracts butterflies, and thousands of butterflies, in fact, fly here from all directions and flutter around Butterfly Spring. Some of the butterflies are as big as a man's palm, and some are as small as a coin. There are more than one hundred kinds of butterflies flying here, and they are all the colors of the rainbow. Many of them may even connect with each other by head and tail, and hang from the big Silktree Albizzia to the water surface. The sight is so amazing that people call it "The Butterflies' Party".
Additional attractions in the Butterfly Spring Park are the Butterfly Pavilion and Butterfly Pillar. There is also a Butterfly Museum, which features many rare specimens of butterflies.
