The Mausoleum of General Yue Fei, located on the West Lake bank is both a historical and patriotic attraction of Hangzhou.
Yue Fei (1103-1142) was the Chief General for the Southe Song dynasty (1127-1279) when it fought Jin Dynasty (1115-1234). One day, suddenly, he was marked as a traitor and sentenced to death by court officials. However, he was exonerated, 21 years later, by Emperor Song Xiaozong (reign 1162-1189) who had his remains placed here. Yuefei's Mausoleum is inscribed with "Endless loyalty and devotion to one's country". According to popular belief, his mother tattooed this quote on his back when he joined the Song dynasty army.
The Mausoleum of General Yue Fei is one of Hangzhou's most popular attractions for Chinese visitors perhaps because of the pride it makes them feels.
You will also find the mausoleum of Yue Yun, Yue Fei's son to the left of General Yue Fei's mausoleum. At the gates to the Mausoleum, you will see iron figures kneeling with hands clasped behind their backs. They represent Qin Hui and his wife Zhang Jun who are the people who betrayed Yue Fei.
