The Dazhao Temple, which means Infinite Temple in Chinese, is located in the old town of Hohhot. It is the oldest building and the largest temple in Hohhot and was originally built in the Han Dynasty. The temple was completed in 1580 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and is the oldest Lama Buddhist temple in Inner Mongolia. It went through a major reconstruction in 1640, but much of the original architectural style was retained. From the Ming Dynasty to the present, the Dazhao Temple has continued to be an integral part of religious life in Hohhot. Festivals and other commemorative events are also commonly held in the temple.

The temple was rebuilt again in 1700, during the Qing Dynasty. The roof of the main hall was changed by the addition of yellow glazed tiles, symbolic of the color of Tibetan Buddhism. The main hall of the temple has the usual characteristics of a Lama temple, and visitors can note the influence of both the Han and Tibetan cultures.
