White Tower's full name is Wan Bu Hua Yan Jing Tower, meaning Ten-Thousand-Volume Huayan Scripture Tower. It is located in the White Tower Village of Hohhot's easte suburb, 17 kilometers from the city center. Originally it was part of a Buddhist temple where the Buddhist scripture was kept. The octagonal tower was done in the architectural style of the Liao Dynasty and is made of brick and wood and painted with chalk. The tower is 55 meters high and has a base shaped like the petals of the lotus. On the surface of the tower are carved relief sculptures of Buddha, Bodhisattva, and heavenly kings and dragons. Six tablets of the Jin Dynasty and more than 200 well-preserved Buddhist scriptures are written on the inside of the tower's walls, in multiple languages. The scriptures record the history and customs of the ancient town Fengzhou. This tower is one of the most exquisite towers from those that were built in the Liao Dynasty. The State Council designated in 1982 that this tower is under the key protection of the State Council.
