Hohhot Overview



Hohhot, Mongolian for green city, the capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is located in central Inner Mongolia and serving as the center of political, economic, cultural and business.  
The city was founded by Mongol ruler Altan Khan in the late 16th century. It was chosen as the region's administrative centre in 1952, replacing Ulanhot. A city with a rich cultural background, Hohhot is known for its historical sites and temples and is one of the major tourist destinations of Inner Mongolia. It is also nationally known as the home of China's dairy giants Mengniu and Yili, and was declared "Dairy Capital of China" by the China Dairy Industry Association and the Dairy Association of China in 2005.  
Hohhot is a famous outside city with 400 years’ history. The historical relics and spots include Dazhao Temple, Five Pagoda Temple, White Tower and Zhaojun Tomb. Local foods are mainly based on north diets, Mongolian and Hui ethnic's cuisine. The most representative is Mongolian meal, such as the food in Mongolian restaurant named Gozsy Lea mother. Hui ethnic snacks are also very popular, the roast lamb shashlik, steamed dumpling and sheep offal of Hui Ethnic Street will make you impressed.
