Houses in Hong Kong are generally built into high blocks, due to the limited space of the island. The limited space at home is one of the reasons why Hong Kong people spend so much time out, eating with friends, walking and hiking and of course at work.
Hong Kong is a compact city and fantastically connected. Public transportation is primarily by the MTR subway system, with ferries, trams and buses. The average commute in Hong Kong is around thirty minutes, door to door, although this is rising as more people move into the New Territories.
Most Hong Kong people work in cloud bursting skyscrapers. Hong Kong has the most skyscrapers in the world, more than double that of 'rival' New York. Skyscrapers are mostly associated with the soaring Central financial district,  and they can also be found in Kowloon and the New Territories.
The working time in Hong Kong is generally from 9a.m.-6p.m., from Monday to Friday, with a half day on Saturday. However, it is very usual that people work much longer hours.
Fresh food is a must in Hong Kong, Cantonese cooking is almost solely based on the freshness of the produce. Frozen food is not common. Hong Kong people usually buy fresh meat and fruit from the local market daily.
Shopping in Hong Kong is a lifestyle. Hong Kong people do shopping with a passion and an addiction, in other words, shopping is the favorite pass time for them. Shops are everywhere, in classic areas like Causeway Bay and the markets in Mongkok and spread out everywhere in between. The close time is often after 10p.m.
Local people like to
head to the best malls in Hong Kong. There are malls stuffed with international boutiques and shops bearing the good from fashion shows around the world. One of them is the Times Square, a massive mall in Causeway Bay.
Hong Kong people also like gambling. Gambling combines nicely money and superstitions—the two of the favorite talking topics in the city. Betting on the weekly Happy Valley races is also a favorite pastime for Hong Kong people.
