In the latter half of the twentieth century, archaeologists in Huai'an have discovered and excavated numerous ancient sites that consist mostly of tombs and graves. The area has a history of over 5,000 years so it comes as no surprise that it is rich in archaeological resources. Hopefully some light will be shed on the lifestyle of ancient people through the continued scientific exploration of the Huai'an region.
Han Xin City is ruins that are located outside of Huai'an, in the district of Qingpu. It was built in 202 B.C, and the ancient wall still exists today. Han Xin was a military general and strategist in the Han Dynasty. With his help, the first Han emperor, Liu Bang, established the Han Dynasty. In the south, west and east side the wall still is standing. The wall is about 4metres high and 4.5metres wide, and from this measurement we can estimate the scale of the ancient city. Surrounding the Han Xin City, there are 72 wells that served the purpose of providing water for the soldiers. Because of the frequent flooding of the Huanghe and Huaihe rivers, the wells have long since been washed away. There are many ancient groves surrounding Han Xin City, and in 1978, in Gaozhuang, not far south, a big grove from the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770 C 256 B.C.) was found, in which a lot of exquisite bronze ware and also slaves martyred to their master were dug out.
In addition, there are other sites in Huai'an including the Qinglian Cultural Relics, Song Dynasty Yangmiao Village Mural Grave, Han Dynasty Sanlidun Grave, Han Dynasty Dongyang Cemetery, Warring States Period Gaozhuang Grave, West Jin Dynasty Dongshan Grave, Ming Dynasty Wang Zheng Couple's Grave, Zhaozhuang Cultural Relics, and many more.
