This hill, situated on the weste bank of the Lijiang river in south Guilin, is shaped like an elephant that is dipping its trunk in the river. Legend believes an elephant, belonging to the Emperor of Heaven, came down to earth to help people. This angered the Emperor of Heaven who stabbed and froze the elephant into stone as it was drinking water from the river. The Water Moon Cave found between the body and the trunk is very interestingly shaped like a full moon floating on water. It has been the inspiration of many famous poets and writers who engraved verses on the cave walls.
Half way up the hill, you will find another cave about 2 meters tall, 5 to 10 meters wide and 52 meters long. Its named the Elephant Eye Cave because its located right by the elephants eyes and provides a great view.
Atop the hill , you will find the Puxian Ta Pagoda, built during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). It is shaped like the handle of a dagger with which the elephant was killed. This hill is great example of how many Chinese tourist attractions all comes with a legend or a historical story to enrich your experience of it.
