As a China Muslim center, Kashgar is endowed by nature with desert, glacier and mountains. Kashgar is bordering the Taklamakan desert in the east, the Kunlun Range and Ali prefecture of in the south. It neighbors Gansu province, Qinghai province, and Tibet Autonomous Region. Yarkant River and the Kashgar River provides a total annual runoff of 10.9 to 11.9 billion cubic meters.
Kashgar has a history of more than 2000 years. It belonged to the Zhuangpu prefectural General's Office of the Hun in Han dynasty. There after, Kashgar submitted to the authorities of the Western Han dynasty after the trading links with Han formed by Zhang Qian, who was the special envoy to the Western Region sent by Emperor Wudi. It was one of the four important towns in Anxi during Tang dynasty. Later, the town became the seat of government of the Kashgar Councilor in Qing dynasty.
Within 5 kilometers from the city center, there are typical historic spots in Kashgar like Id Kah Mosque, Kashgar Sunday Bazaar and Abakh Khoia Tomb. Visitors may prefer to take a bike tour to discover these historic sites.
The ethnic groups in Kashgar are mainly Han, Hui and Uygur. People of different nationalities live harmoniously together. Visitors can learn more about the history of the ancient Silk Road in the renowned Sunday Bazaar and the less known but more amazing animal Bazaar. In Kashgar animal Bazaar, there are sheep section, cow section, horse cart section, etc. Dealers negotiate silently with hand gestures. Visitors to Kashgar will be amazed by the Kashgar's local songs and dance, crafts, deli
cious roast lamb, shishi-kebab, and baled fish. Life is easy like in the ancient time.
The climate in Kashgar is mainly a continental climate. Normally there are 215 frost-free days every year. The average temperature is 11.7 C annually with the lowest of -24.4 C and the highest of 40.1 C. The annual rainfall is 27 mm.
The local specialty products in Kashgar are wheat, maize cotton, barley, highland barley, rape, sesame, peanuts and flax.
