You cannnot come to Kashgar without paying a visit to Id Kah Mosque because it is one of the most famous attractions here. In fact, the gate tower has become the symbol of the historical city of Kashgar. It is the largest Islamic mosque in China and famous all over the world. The mosque dates back to 1442 with 16,820 sq meters of area, which can hold up to 20,000 people.
Thousands of people come here to pray and worship everyday. It is even more crowded during religious festivals when all the Muslims in Xinjiang Uigur Autonomous Region come here to celebrate. Afterwards they pray, they will gather in the square in front of the Id Kah Mosque to dance and celebrate.
In 1962, it was put under the protection of the autonomous region. The Id Kah Mosque is now more than just a gathering place for Islamic worshipers but also a scenic spot for tourists who come to Kashgar.
