The Flowers and Birds Market, located on Jingxing Street in Kunming, is the city's biggest, most popular shopping area. Since 1983, the Flowers and Birds Market has developed into a center for entertainment, shopping and trading. The market offers the typical Chinese shopping atmosphere with bargaining shoppers and shrewd shopkeepers. One can purchase all kinds of flowers and birds but, despite what its name suggests, that is not the end of it. One can also find a wide array of souvenirs, handicrafts, fishes, turtles, cats, dogsé—…?shy;etc. But do take care since a lot of the antiques sold here are not authentic. A popular Yunan souvenir is a water pipe used to smoke tobacco. These metal or wood pipes come in different sizes and styles. This market is a great place to get one to bring home. But be prepared to bargain since most of the prices here are at least double the actual price.
To get there: The Bird & Flower Market is located between the city center and Renmin Zhong Lu. The #1 Bus will drop you off about 5 minutes northeast of the market at the Renmin Zhong Lu stop.
