Yuantong Temple (Yuantong Si), located on the south side of Yuantong Hill, is the largest and most popular temple in Kunming dating back to over 1200 years ago. The temple is famous because it once held a tooth of Buddha. The reception and send off of the famous tooth were both important events at the temple during which ceremonies were held. The architecture is similar to most other temples in China except that the halls in the temple are lined up in a declining slope fashion instead of the usual ascending slope for most Chinese temples. The temple is famous also for its several scenic spots as well as a pool where you can set fish free (Fangshengchi). Yuantong temple is a center that draws Buddhists from the area as well as from all over the world. Buddhist services are held here twice a month (on the 1st and the 15th) and the Buddhist Association of Yunnan Province is based here as well. You can come here and participate in the bimonthly.
