Lhasa Climate

Lhasa, as one of the highest cities in the world, covers a flat river valley in the Himalaya Mountains.

Lhasa features a cold steppe climate. Owing to Lhasa’s very high altitude, it has a cool and dry climate with frosty winters. The sunlight shines 3,000 hours annually and it enjoys the reputation of "sunlit city" by Tibetans.

The annual precipitation of Lhasa is 400 millimeters (16 in) and the rainfall is mainly in July, August and September. However, it rains mostly at night but it is sunny again during the daytime. So the rainy season is widely regarded the "best" of the year.

Lhasa's climate is very comfortable and it can be said that it is not hot in summer and not cold in winter, here, Lhasa sleep. Summer is the rainy season. Generally speaking, it is raining from Junes to Septembers. However, it is different from other cities, for it rains at night and sunny again in daytime. The air is very fresh and clean after raining just like it is cleaned in the evening. Moreover, there is no industry in Lhasa, so the air is good to breath. The temperature in summer is generally from 10℃ to 20℃, so it is very comfortable. However, you must protect the skin when you go out. The sun there is very big and the ultraviolet radiation is quite strong. Wearing a parasol, hat, sunglasses, or sunscreen is my advice to you.

Although summer is the rainy season in Lahsa, the air is far drier than many areas of mainland. So you need to pay attention to add water to your body and mineral water is a good choice.Wearing a jacket is necessari
ly in the morning and evening. At noon, you can wear T- shirts. When facing rain, you need put on a jacket and pants.

Many parts of the south in mainland is overcast and short of sunshine in winter. Many people think it is colder and icy in Lahsa. In fact, to the opposite, snow is rare in winter and generally in   March or April of spring. But not much snow in Lhasa. There are some features in winter of Lahsa. Blue sky and bright sun is in particular.  And it is the best season to see snow-capped mountains.
