Travel to and around Lhasa

By air
The airport in Lhasa is Gonggar Airport. Tourists often prefer to start from
Chengdu in Sichuan, as there are frequent  flights to Lhasa, about 20 flights per week.  There are also direct flights from Beijing, Guangzhou ,Chongqing, Xining and Xi’an. Travelers from Nepal may take the flight from Katmandu to Lhasa.


By Road
There are five highways through Tibet: Sichuan-Tibet Highway, Qinghai-Tibet Highway, Xinjiang-Tibet Highway, Yunnan-Tibet Highway and China-Nepal Highway. Due to the severe geographical reasons, the road conditions are not so satisfactory. Sometimes passengers will be advised to take the land cruisers.


●By Train

Travelers may take trains to visit Tibet. There are train lines from many big cities, such as Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Lanzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing and Xining. And the lines may pass by many scenery spots as well, for example, the Qinghai Lake, Kunlun Mountains, Kekexili, etc.


By Minibus
To travel in the town of Lhasa, the minibus is a good choice. They only charge CNY2 for each passenger, and can be found easily around Beijing Road. The minibus may take you to many scenery sites in Lhasa city, such as the Drepung Monastery, the Sera Monastery, and the railway station.


By Taxi
It is easy to hail a taxi in the downtown. Generally, it costs only CNY10 to travel within the city. For destinations out of the town, th

e price needs to be negociated.
By Pedicab
It takes much longer time to travel by pedicabs, however, it is a good way to appreciate the local flavor in the downtown area. The cost is CNY4 to 7 for one pedicab.


By Bicycle
Passengers can rent a bike for free and leisurely sightseeing in Lhasa city. The bikes can be rented on Barkhor Street. The price for an ordinary bike is RMB 2 per hour and RMB 20 per day; RMB 3 per hour and RMB 30 per day for a mountain bike.
