The Shanghai Ocean Aquarium (SOA), located just next to the Oriental Pearl Tower, is the largest aquarium in Shanghai and one of the most beautiful in the world. The aquarium covers an area of 20, 500 square meters. Since its opening in February 2002, the aquarium has received more than 1 million visitors yearly.
SOA is divided into 9 different thematic zones showing over 450 species of aquatic animals from the five continents and four oceans. Its design concept is to bring visitors on an underwater jouey from China to the major continents and regions of the world. Each zone in the aquarium is specially made to simulate the natural habitat of each aquatic specie not only to accommodate the species but also to allow visitors to experience each unique region. SOA even has an exhibition dedicated to rare and precious species from the famous Yangtze River.
The purpose of SOA is to inspire visitors of all ages and from all walks of life to understand and care about our water life. Every exhibit and program is designed to excite and amaze audiences.
