Shanghai Science and Technology Museum is the center of science leaing and education in Shanghai. Its purpose is to improve the scenic and culture knowledge of the citizens. The museum uses demonstrations, visitor participation, hands-on experiments to popularize science and technology for people of all ages. The museum emphasizes leaing through play by providing many interesting displays booths that you can interactively explore.
Shanghai Science and Technology Museum currently has 12 sections open to the public like the Wide Spectrum of Life Section, the Earth Exploration Section, the Information Era Section or the World of Robots. Each section allows visitors to lea about important areas of science through exploration and self-discovery. Human and Health section lets participants understand the workings and wonders of the human body. Apart from those listed above, there are Spiders Exhibition highlighting the unique lifestyle of spiders, Chinese Ancient Science & Tech Gallery showing Chinese ancient inventions and creations, and Explorers' Gallery featuring distinguished Chinese and foreign explorers. The Museum of Nature, which is located at 260 Yan'an Road (east), shows the history of evolution and natural selection. The whole exhibition area of the museum covers 65,000 square meters.
The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum also features four special purpose theaters; large format theater, Dome Theater, IWERKS Theater and Astronautic Theater, which constitute the largest science film city of its kind in Asia with 8000 showings yearly.
On October 21, 2001, APEC Ninth Informal Leader Conference was held here and the museum showed advanced cultural philosophy and unique spirit of Shanghai as an inteational metropolis. In less than four years since its opening in December, 2001, the museum has received 8,260,000 people, 39% of which is the young generation. This museum functions as the science and technology base of Shanghai delighting the young and the old alike.
