Suqian Travel Guide
Suqian is a city with a history of 2,500 years but the earliest use of the town current name was in 762 A.D. during the Tang Dynasty. Later, this prefecture jurisdiction and the name were changed and abandoned many times upon the replacement of dynasties. After the founding of the People Republic of China in 1945, Suqian was restored as a county and the current jurisdiction as a prefecture city was established in 1996.
In 1954 important archaeological findings from the New Stone Age (roughly 40,000-50,000 years ago) in the town of Shuanggou put Suqian on the map. With the discovery of what is known as the Drunken Ape, one of the world first primitive men, scientists are considering the theory that Jiangsu and Anhui provinces centered around the Shuanggou area might be a place of origin for the world earliest human inhabitants.
The city is located on the North Jiangsu Plain, with a high elevation of 71 meters above sea level and the lowest at 2.8 meters. Land occupies three quarters of the city total area and the water surface area covers one third. There are two freshwater lakes in Suqian, Lake Hongze, which is one of the four largest lakes in China, and Lake Luoma, which is known for its clean, pure water. Four rivers run through the city, including the Grand Canal, Huaihe River, Yihe River and Suhe River.
The city is located in a temperate zone with an ocean monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. Annual average temperature is 17 centi-degree and annual average precipitation is 910 millimeters, which is less than the neighboring eastern and southern areas.
