Xining is located on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with an average altitude of about 2,200 meters. It is on the upper reaches of the Yellow River. It is the political, economic, and cultural center of Qinghai Province. The history of Xining can be traced to 2,100 years ago. During the Western and Eastern Han dynasties, attention was paid to Xining due to its economic and military significance. Xining served as the important hinge between the Central Plains and the western part of China in ancient times, and it was an important link in the Silk Road.
Influenced by the aridity and high altitude, Xining has a cold semi-arid climate. The cool summer in Xining also won for the city the dub name Summer Resort Capital of China. Lows are cold or cool throughout the year, and highs are often more than 15 °C (27 °F) warmer than lows.

Xining is the first city on the upper reaches of the Yellow River to achieve a population in the millions. The total population of Xining in the year 2008 is approximately 2,177,900, with an urban population of 1,329,000. About 37 nationalities live in Xining. The Han, Hui, Monguor and Tibetan are numerically significant. Xining is divided into five districts, three counties, and a national economic and technological development zone. The famous tourist sites in Xining include Kumbum Monastery or Ta'er Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism, the Dongguan Mosque, the Qinghai Lake and Bird Island, the Laoye Mountain, etc.. There is a traditional singing festival every year on the 6th day of the 6th lunar month, and attracts a great number of visitors.
