In history, Fengdu used to be a burial area with scores of temples and shrines. Now it is a very popular onshore excursion destination for Yangtze River cruises , with the name “Ghost City.” After the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, most of the city is underwater. A hill and a few temples, that is, the area above the “Door of Hell” remains. This part is left for visitors. Statues and frescoes about hell with images of demons and etcetera painted in bright colors can be viewed. In Chinese legend, Fengdu is where the devil lives. After death, spirits go to heaven, and evil goes to Fengdu. The Hill Ming Shan overlooks the town, the hill was said to be the home of Tianzi, the King of the Dead. The temple on the top of the hill is dedicated to Tianzi.
