Before three billion and eight thousand years, the location of Zhangjiajie was a large patch of ocean. After series of geological changes, this ocean rose and the sandstone pillars and peaks took shape gradually.
Zhangjiajie belongs to the sub-tropical humid monsoon climate. The climate there is humid and favorable, which attributes to splendid mountains and thick trees.

Sunshine: it is adequate in sunshine and more in summer than in winter. The annual average sunshine is 1440 hours.
Rainfall: the rainfall is rich though the whole year and the amount of rainfall are 1400 mm.
Frost: Frost is rare in Zhangjiajie and the free- frost period is about 216 to 269 days a year.
Cultural damages: The climate is influenced by the special landforms and ground feature, the climate is complex and changeable in the city. The most frequent damage there is droughts, floods, storms, and hails.
