Qutang gorge is the shortest among the three gorges, with a length of only 8 kilometers. At the Western end of the gorge, sharp cliffs rise hundreds of meters on both sides of the Yangtze River. In Qing Dynasty, a very narrow footway with the width of 0.4—1.5 meters were built by man power around the cliffs.
Qutang Gorge winds 5 kilometers from the White King Town. Along the banks, there are many beautiful tourist sites. Kui Gate, also named the Qutang Pass. Is at the southwest of the Qutang Gorge, is formed by two peaks: Mt. Baiyan (White Salt Mountain) in the north and Mt. Chijia soar above the horizon. Between the steep cliffs along the banks, the Yangtze River resembles a narrow belt winding its way through the deep canyons. Visitors will be amazed by the grand picture of the deep gorge, rapidly-flowing water, and chains of mountains.
After the construction of the Three Gorges Dam Project, Qutang Gorge experienced great changes: some historic relics along the two banks have been submerged in the water. Now the scenery is more like a smooth lake between the narrow gorge banks.
