The Shibaozhai resembles a strangely-shaped pagoda embracing a hill. The hill is on the bank of the Yangtze River. It is about 200 meters tall with steep sides. On the hill, there was a three story temple. Like Fengdu City, Shibaozhai is a popular onshore excursion destination for Yangtze River cruises. Now affected by the lake behind the 3 Gorges Dam, Shibaozhai was considered important to protect by the local government, thus a wall was built around it.
The temple was first built around the year 1750 during Qing Dynasty. There has been a lot of recent renovations to the temple. Between 2005 and 2008, there was a large-scale rebuilt and decoration. A coffer dam to protect it from the flooding from the Three Gorges Dam. Now visitors have an easier access to the temple, because ships can reach it directly.
